A Smooth Drive Soon
Good news! Traffic flow in Hougang is set to improve! Work began in mid-December and will be ongoing for 12 months to make traffic there flow smoother.
To achieve this, the junction of Hougang Avenue 7, Tampines Road and Defu Avenue 1 will be widened. Hougang Avenue 7 will also be widened into a dual three-lane road, with new slip roads constructed at its junction with Tampines Road.
In a letter to residents, Adviser to Hougang Grassroots Organisations, Eric Low, said when completed, traffic flow from Hougang Avenue 5 to Tampines Road will definitely be smoother. “We are continually reviewing facilities within our control in the Hougang estate, so as to benefit residents and make Hougang a better place to live for everyone,” he said.
Hurrah, Buangkok Station Opens
Here’s something to really cheer about. At last – Buangkok MRT station is opening. The big date is January 15, SBS Transit has announced.
The station, along the North East Line (NEL) was scheduled to open when NEL started operations in 2003. But it stayed closed because the authorities felt there wasn’t enough traffic to justify the operating costs.
Residents in the area have, since then, lobbied for it to be opened and Transport Minister Yeo Cheow Tong promised it would open before the Lunar New Year.
It’s a promise that is going to be kept.
It’s Chingay Time Again!
Catch the Chingay – possibly Asia’s biggest float parade – as it weaves its way into the North East district this Lunar New Year.
At the main parade in Orchard Road on February 3 and 4, there will be a street party (on February 4 only) rock band music and street rockers partying and performing all night. There will also be street art by youths from six institutions including Temasek Polytechnic. Each institution was given a stretch of Orchard Road allowed to adorn it as they wished. On display will be lots of installation pieces and others reflecting young people’s dreams and aspirations.
For the second year running, Chingay Parade of DreamS 2006, organised by the People’s Association (PA) will be a two-week festival in public places and the HDB heartlands, so that more Singaporeans and tourists can enjoy it.
So, if you can’t make it to Orchard Road, catch Chingay LIVE at Pasir Ris East where you can take part in a quiz and win prizes at the Open Field next to Block 213, Pasir Ris Drive 4 on Saturday February 4 from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. You can also catch Chingay Rocks @ the Heartlands in Aljunied/Hougang and Street Art by Youth @ Chingay at Temasek Polytechnic. For more information go to www.chingay.org.sg
