What Men Want for Valentine’s

At your wits’ end thinking what to get him for Valentine’s Day? We sent a man out shopping at Compass Point in Sengkang and here’s what he found.
By RAYMOND KOH.

Shopping for a man is not easy and it only takes a couple of hours around any shopping mall to realise that. It’s just that there aren’t as many items to pick from, com- pared to shopping for women

If you’re looking for a Valentine’s gift, you’ll have to think broader. No frilly, fussy stuff. No sweety, tweety soft toys. No delicate edibles (okay maybe chocolates) No diamonds, no lingerie (do socks count?) no flowers, although men secretly like getting flowers! But you must choose the right kind. Don’t send him pink flowers with white baby’s breath.

One big hint is to give gifts, not just hugs and kisses. Generally speaking (and the emphasis is on generally here) men are more keen on gifts or gadgets rather than little notes smeared with lipstick or mushy SMS Valentines’ messages.

So buy them something they can use, wear or play with (like computer games, X-Boxes, etc). They rather show off their watches or photos downloaded on their IPODs as Valentines’ presents from you, than display that pretty bou- quet of roses on their office desk.

It may take a bit more legwork shopping for a man. But with a little creativity and lots of browsing, you can locate that ideal gift.

CLOTHE HIM

Photo: IS long-sleeve shirt ($20) and pleated pants ($29) with a Jacques Mercier silk tie ($10) and San Raphael leather belt ($15). Available at John Little.

Catering for the busy executive who only has time figuring out his company’s bottom line, the men’s business attire at John Little never fails to attract throngs of lady shoppers during Valentine’s Day. Business outfits seldom vary in cut or design, and most shoppers are happy paying for something of reasonably good quality and which wouldn’t burst their bank account. The IS long-sleeve business shirt and pleated pants coupled with a Jacque Mercier silk tie and a handsome San Raphael leather belt, will make any executive look ready for his next million-dollar deal.

WATCH HIM

Photo: Polo Spirit Chrono ($179) available at Vincent Watch.

Watches are perennial favourites as gift items for men on any occasion. This Valentine’s Day, check out Vincent Watch for the trendiest timepieces for your man. Apart from many established brands, it also carries some other avant-garde watches that would look good on any male wrist. The Tommy Hilfiger silver dress watch is classy and the Polo Spirit Chronograph will look majestic whether he’s scaling Kinabalu or sky-diving with his dare- devil friends.

GROOM HIM

Photo: Adidas Active Deodorant Body Spray (green – $6), Energizing Shower Gel with Vitamin C ($8) and David Beckham Eau De Toilet ($73). Available at John Little.

Adidas has never failed to diversify its range of products beyond sports-wear and the new series of Adidas Active Series of men’s toiletries are just as sporty in its spanky green and orange bottles. If your guy has never used any deodorant or fragrant sprays, these items might be your answer to his unyielding denial of his need for ‘aroma’ therapy!

Not to be outdone, David Beckham has also launched his series of men’s toiletries for sporting male athlete. Aptly called the David Beckham Instinct deodorant spray and Eau De Toilet, Beckham fans would delight in displaying these items on theirshelves to show off to their friends, even if they don’t use them.

For those men who do not have any sporting inclinations, the Alpha Blue Men’s Eau De Toilet may suit their tastes better.
