'Active citizenship' is a mouthful and
many of us will be hard put to define it. So when these residents give
a bit of themselves to others, they probably aren't trying to be 'active
citizens'. But no matter. What counts is, they are. Are you?

Zetty A Kadir, Chng Weini with one of her charges from the SCAS school,
ITE East lecturer Lee Lay Hee.
With her sweet young face and petite frame, it's hard to believe that
Nur Zetty A Kadir, 25, hangs out regularly with juvenile delinquents
and young offenders. Yet that's what she has been doing as a Volunteer
Probation Officer for the past four years. Her demure appearance belies
a spunky energy for helping probationers make good.
Zetty is part of Operation Night Watch, where volunteers make night
checks on probationers to ensure that they adhere to their curfew. She
works full days as a secondary school teacher, but come night, she dutifully
walks to probationers' homes - 16 homes each week - to check on those
under her charge.
