You can't help
but feel very much at home at Bibik's. From the refreshingly unpretentious
décor, the cosy seating area to the home-style Peranakan food,
you can expect a pleasant dining experience.
The menu is extensive, given the size of the restaurant and includes
perennial favourites such as Ayam Buah Keluak ($5.50) and Babi Assam
($4.80). To the uninitiated, the former is a dish consisting of black
nuts from the "Kepayang" tree. The nuts are really an acquired
taste but one's enjoyment of it can be vastly enhanced by good cooking.
The chef did her best and the result was a more than palatable dish.
The Babi Assam (pork ribs in spicy tamarind gravy) was another outstanding
offering, with just the right sweetness.
My personal favourite is the Udang Chilli Garam ($5.80) where the use
of tamarind gives a distinctive flavour and pungency to the fried prawns.
The Sambal Bendi ($3.50) was a surprising delight. Simple dishes are
often the hardest to prepare but the chef managed to cook the lady's
fingers to perfection, retaining its crunchiness without undercooking
it. I liked the gravy of the Sotong Goreng ($5) which had just the right
mix of salty, sour and spicy flavours although a crispier batter for
the deep-fried squid would have done the dish more justice.
