New Care Centre Opens
The Simei Care Centre, Singapore's largest purpose-built
psychiatric rehabilitation centre, was recently opened by President
S R Nathan.
Located just behind Changi General Hospital, it is meant for patients
recovering from mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression and
obsessive-compulsive disorders.
The $9.7 million centre was built by the Singapore Anglican Community
and 90 percent funded by the government. It can house 120 residents
(paying from $192 to $500) a month and 150 day care patients (paying
from $100 a month). At present, it has 97 residents and 65 day care
patients.
To help patients in their recovery there is a karaoke room, a gym and
a basketball court, plus facilities and space for art and craft, music
therapy and games. In addition, shops in the centre - including a fl
orist, hairdressing salon, thrift shop, gift shop and picture frame
shop - provide work for some of the patients.
